Education and English Language Assistance

Guidance on school, careers, and English, for newcomers and long-time residents alike.

School, work, and English, one step at a time

Whether you arrived last month or have lived here for many years, the school system, the job market, and daily life in English can be hard to figure out. Hispana offers guidance in three areas: education, careers, and help with English.

Our director knows this road. He arrived as an immigrant, went on to earn graduate degrees, and has taught at the high school, community college, and graduate level.

Our help is free.

Who we help

  • People who are new to this country, and people who have lived here for years.
  • Young adults who came to the United States as children.
  • Parents who want to understand their children's school options.
  • Adults who want a better job or want to go back to school.
  • Anyone who needs help with documents, forms, or appointments in English.

How we help

Education guidance

  • We explain how the school system works, from kindergarten to university.
  • We explain your options: the GED, certificate programs, community college, and university.
  • We help you choose a school and enroll, for your children or for yourself.

Career guidance

  • We talk with you to find your strengths and skills.
  • We help you find jobs that fit you, or an education path to build the skills you need.
  • We stay with you until you feel confident about your next step.

English language assistance

  • We help you read and understand documents written in English.
  • We help you write letters and documents in English.
  • We help you follow processes that are explained only in English, and fill out forms written in English.
  • We can go with you to appointments and offices to help you speak and file paperwork.

Please note: We are not certified translators or interpreters. Courts and some agencies require a certified translator or interpreter. When you need one, we help you find one.

What to bring and what to expect

Please bring:

  • A photo ID.
  • Any documents, letters, or forms you need help with.
  • School records or diplomas from any country, if you have them.
  • A list of past jobs, or a résumé if you have one.
  • A list of your questions.

What to expect: We meet with you in Spanish or English, listen to your goals, and plan your next steps together. Our help is free. If a school, testing center, or agency charges a fee, such as an application fee or a GED test fee, you pay that fee directly. We never promise admission to a school or a job.

Your next door starts here

Understanding a letter in English, going back to school, finding work that fits you: each step opens new doors to better jobs and a stronger voice in your community. Hispana is here to walk with you.
