Tax Filing Assistance
Practical help preparing and filing your taxes, in the language you are comfortable in.
Filing taxes is confusing enough in your first language, let alone a second one. Hispana offers hands on help for individuals and families who want to prepare and file their taxes, especially those who are new to this country's tax system or still building their English. This help is grounded in years of personal experience: our director has done his own taxes and helped family and friends with theirs for decades.
Our help is free.
Please note: Hispana is not a CPA firm or a paid tax preparer. We help you prepare and file your own return. For complex situations, we help you find more help (see below).
Who we help
- Individuals and families filing a federal and Arizona tax return.
- People filing for the first time, or for the first time in this country.
- Workers who receive a W-2, a 1099, or both, and are not sure what to do with them.
- People who run their own small business.
- Anyone who received a letter from the IRS or the Arizona Department of Revenue and does not understand it.
How we help
- We help you prepare and file your return. We sit with you, step by step, as you complete and send your federal and Arizona returns, using trusted filing tools, including free ones when you qualify.
- We help you know which documents you need. We help you find what to gather and what counts as income, so nothing is missing.
- We explain your tax forms. We go through your W-2s, 1099s, and other forms with you, and explain what each one means.
- We help you avoid common mistakes. We point out the errors that cost people money or cause delays, like a wrong Social Security number or a missing form.
- We help you understand letters. If the IRS or the Arizona Department of Revenue writes to you, we help you read the letter and understand what it asks.
Tax numbers: ITIN and EIN
ITIN. An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax number for people who do not have a Social Security number, including people who run their own business. We explain what an ITIN is, who needs one, and help you with Form W-7, the application for an ITIN.
EIN. An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a tax number for a business. If you own a business, we help you understand what an EIN is and how to apply for one.
Please note: Hispana is not an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent.
When you need more help
Some tax situations are more complex than what we can help with. When that happens, we help you find a free VITA site (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), where volunteers are certified by the IRS, or a qualified tax professional.
What to bring and what to expect
Please bring:
- A photo ID for you and your spouse, if you file together.
- Social Security cards or ITIN letters for everyone on the return.
- All income forms: W-2, 1099, and any others you received.
- If you own a business: your income and expense records, and your EIN if you have one.
- Last year's tax return, if you have it.
- Any letters from the IRS or the Arizona Department of Revenue.
- Your bank account and routing number, if you want your refund by direct deposit.
What to expect: We will meet with you in English or Spanish and go through your papers together. We explain every step in plain words. You stay in control: you review your return, and you sign it. Our help is free. We never promise a refund amount.
